You can perform a preliminary search at California’s secretary of state’s website, but for official availability, you will need to follow the link for your type of entity and then send an old-fashioned letter to check the availability.
The sec. of state site (http://kepler.ss.ca.gov/list.html) expressly states, “This search . . . is not intended to provide a name availability search. For information on checking or reserving an entity name, please refer to Name Availability for Corporations, Limited Liability Companies or Limited Partnerships.”
